To be well integrated amongst thai people and to avoid any behaviour mistakes, please find hereafter the main rules to respect :
▪ Loosing face is the worst thing that can occur to asian people and particularly to thaï person. Any coleric attitude is seen as vulgar and unpleasant. In Thailand, one says hello by bowing body while joigning hands in front of the head ("the waï") and never by shaking hands. The higher teh hands, the most important the people. ▪ Patriotism : criticize Thailand is the major offense which must be avoided if one wants to keep good relationship. Radio and television broadcast every day, at 8 am and 6 am, the national anthem. You can hear him also everywhere through loud speakers. Thaïs stop working and stand up. It is recommended to do the same. In general, thaï people pay half rates compared to foreigner one's. It is a citizenship priviledge for Thais in their country. It might be shocking for us used with egality. The best is to comply with it since there is no other choice.
▪ Royalty : Thaïs venerate Royal Family and can not afford negative comments referring to members of the Royal Family. ▪ Dressing customs : person who visits religious place must wear correct clothes : shirt, skirt or long pant. Nothing that may be considered as shocking (mini skirt. bermuda. short. slipover...). Some temples gently require to wear a sarong before entrance to the temple . It is always obligatory the leave its shoes at the entrance of the temple. It is also the case before entering into a house. Numerous shoes at the entrance will remind it to you. Not following this habit is very outrageous . Nudity and even monokini are not seen on thai beaches. It is forbidden. ▪ Religion : Every représentation of Bouddha is considered as holy. Never climb on a statue to take picture and avoid all kind of event that might be considered as lack of respect as being de Bouddha. Monk must not be touched especially by a woman. To offer a gift to a monk, a woman must give evidence within reach hand. In order not to disturb a monk, a woman must avoid to sit near him in common transport.
▪ Men/women itudede in public : all deep tender relation between a man and a woman in public is not welcome. Some young couples walk hand in hand : that is the borderline tolerated. ▪ Others : For Thaï people, the head is considered as the noble party of body and it is better to avoid to touch it (especially for childrens). On the contrary, feet are the worst part of the body. It is very umpolite to show something or somebody with a foot. In a temple, you must fold up legs under body if you sit on the floor or at least, not put your foot in the direction of Buddha. Avoid also to span somebody lying on the floor. Bending the body is the thaï attitude to apologize. ▪ Important memo : Before taking off for dreaming countries, do not forget that complications can happen and anticipate give organisation simply on place.
